Winter Break and Preparations for the Crossing

Late 2020 and first quarter of 2021 – Having secured the new administration in DC, Emmanou headed down to Portsmouth VA to dock up at the best long-term marina deal we could find at Ocean Yacht Marina.  Having secured Emmanou, we headed cross-country in a rental car to Denver to spend Christmas and New Year with Zhach and Alex at Zhach’s new house (having bought him a fancy sleeper-couch, we claimed his living room) and take them skiing in Steamboat.  After overstaying our welcome at Zhach’s we tried to head up to Vancouver to see Evan and Emma but were thwarted by United Airlines changing planes in SFO and ended up driving down to LA to hang with Thach’s little sister Caroline.  Fortuitously the stay in LA allowed us to get our COVID vaccination.  While waiting for the booster, we headed to Utah to ski Brighton, Solitude, Alta and Deer Valley, meeting up with old friends Larry and Andra, Elliot and Barb, and David Weiner and his son Rocky.  After returning to LA (via Moab) for our booster, we turned around and drove back cross-country to pick up our stuff in Denver, stop in Chicago to visit Thach’s mother, in Indiana to see Myles who was working on a windfarm construction project for Vestas before returning to Portsmouth and taking Emmanou South to Florida to get her annual maintenance and add equipment for her Atlantic crossing and European cruising:

  • Passarelle (for stern med-moorings)
  • Dive tank compressor
  • New fridges and ice maker
  • New induction cooktop
  • New Advantium microwave
  • New oven
  • New rugs (to switch out the old ones after the crossing)
Out with the old…
… in with the new
Happy Emmanou
